We are now on our winter observing schedule and will be open the first and third Friday of each month, weather permitting. This relatively new and growing facility strives to "provide quality educational experiences for people of all ages through the science, technology, and history of astronomy." Offering a variety of unique public stargazing opportunities, educational lectures, family-friendly events, and more, the Adirondack Sky Center & Observatory is exposing the night sky in a whole new dimension. The Kopernik Observatory & Science Center in Vestal, NY is offering weeklong STEM-themed camps for. It is here where the Adirondack Sky Center & Observatory (formerly the Adirondack Public Observatory) has been laying its roots into the dark side of a hill on Big Wolf Road. It is not too late to register for Kopernik Summer Camps. The combination of low-light pollution, low humidity and high altitude provide nearly ideal conditions for night sky viewing. See information about evening events.Countdown to the Total Solar Eclipse - April 8, 2024 George Ellery Hale, the Chicago native responsible for building Yerkes Observatory, moved to California and went on to establish Mount Wilson observatory, with it's 60-inch and 100-inch reflecting (mirror-style) telescopes, and ultimately Mount Palomar with the incredible 200-inch Hale Telescope, still one of the largest in the world.
OBSERVATORY NEAR ME PORTABLE
Star Party viewing is with portable telescopes located in the Conservation Garden. Space is filled with a variety of objects, some blisteringly hot, some tremendously cold, but areas with little to nothing at all never drop to absolute zero thanks to a fossil relic left over from its earliest moments. Nighttime viewing is available at our monthly star parties, held on the second Saturday of each month and during special events, depending on the weather. How cold is space Physics behind the temperature of the universe. Observatory Park will be dark, but please do not bring a bright flashlight bring a red light as it will be less intrusive to other watchers. We cannot allow guests on our rooftop deck during rain or thunderstorms for safety reasons. We are happy to conduct tours of our observatory even on cloudy days – please call ahead for staff availability.
We cannot guarantee that the observatory will be operable at any given time. Please note that even minor weather considerations, such as haze or wispy clouds, can completely block our view of the sky.
